US Visa Dropbox (Interview Waiver): Document Checklist & Interview Questions
Renewal without an interview — since September 2025 mainly for B1/B2 visas that expired within the last 12 months. Documents are submitted at the VAC.
The Interview Waiver Program ('dropbox') was cut back sharply from 2 September 2025. For most Indian applicants it is now only available to renew a B1/B2 (or C1/D) visa when: the previous visa was in the same category and issued for full validity, it expired less than 12 months ago, you were 18 or older when it was issued, you have never been refused (or the refusal was overcome), and you apply in your country of nationality or residence. F-1, H-1B, H-4, L and J applicants now need an interview, and children under 14 / adults over 79 no longer get an automatic waiver. Even if you qualify, the consulate can still call you for an interview.

Common US Dropbox interview questions & sample answers
Sample answers show the style that works — short, specific and honest. Use your own true details; officers can tell when an answer is memorised.
Sample answerUsually only if you are renewing a full-validity B1/B2 visa that expired within the last 12 months, you were 18 or older when it was issued, you have never been refused, and you are applying in India as an Indian national or resident. The booking portal asks eligibility questions before letting you choose dropbox.
Answer the eligibility questions truthfully — wrong answers get the application returned and waste time.
Sample answerYour passport is returned and you will be asked to book a regular interview appointment. This does not mean a refusal.
Sample answerOften 1–3 weeks after submission, but it can be longer during peak seasons or if administrative processing is needed.
Don't book non-refundable travel until your passport is back.
Sample answerNo. Since September 2025 these categories (and L and J) need an in-person interview, even for renewals.
