US B1/B2 Visitor Visa: Document Checklist & Interview Questions
Tourist, family-visit and business-trip visa for the USA. Interview at the US Embassy / Consulates in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata.
The B1/B2 visa covers tourism, visiting family and short business trips (meetings, conferences). You attend two appointments in India: biometrics at the Visa Application Center (VAC/OFC) and an in-person interview at the US Embassy or a Consulate. Since September 2025 you must apply in your country of nationality or residence, and children under 14 generally need their own appointment too. Officially you only need your passport, DS-160 confirmation and appointment letter — everything else is supporting evidence the officer may (or may not) ask to see. Your answers and your DS-160 matter most.

Common US B1/B2 interview questions & sample answers
Sample answers show the style that works — short, specific and honest. Use your own true details; officers can tell when an answer is memorised.
Sample answerI am going for tourism for two weeks. I plan to visit New York, Washington DC and Niagara Falls, and I will return on the 20th of next month because my leave ends then.
Answer in one or two sentences. Mention purpose, duration and that you will return — that's all the officer wants to hear first.
Sample answerFifteen days, from 5th to 20th June.
Give exact dates. A vague answer like 'maybe a month or two' raises doubts.
Sample answerI will stay with my brother in New Jersey. He works there as a software engineer on an H-1B visa.
Be honest about relatives — the officer may already know from your DS-160. Hiding it is far worse than having family there.
Sample answerI am a senior accountant at ABC Pvt Ltd in Pune. I have worked there for six years.
State your role, employer and how long you've worked there. Stable employment is one of your strongest ties.
Sample answerMy annual salary is ₹14 lakh.
Know your exact annual salary — it should match your ITR and salary slips.
Sample answerI am paying for it myself from my savings.
If a sponsor pays, say who and why, and carry their financial documents.
Sample answerYes, I visited Singapore in 2023 and Dubai in 2024 for tourism.
Travel history helps. If you haven't travelled, simply say 'No, this will be my first international trip' — it is not a rejection reason by itself.
Sample answerYes, I am married and we have a 7-year-old daughter. They will stay in India.
Family staying back in India is a strong tie — mention it naturally.
Sample answerMy brother's son is graduating in June and the whole family wants to attend. I also have annual leave approved for those dates.
Link the timing to a real reason (event, leave, holidays).
Sample answerI will resume work at my office on 21st June.
Confident, specific answers about returning matter more than any document.
Sample answerYes, once in 2023 under section 214(b). Since then I have been promoted and I visited Singapore and Dubai and returned on time.
Never hide a previous refusal — it is already in the system. Explain briefly and honestly what has changed.
Quick tips
- Most B1/B2 interviews last 2–3 minutes — keep answers short, specific and honest.
- Every answer must match your DS-160. Re-read it the night before.
- Officers often don't look at documents. Hand them over only if asked.
- Each applicant, including children, needs their own DS-160 and appointment.
